New York Rethinks the Sidewalk Shed

Mayor Bloomberg came out with an announcement this week that:
"This new design is great for building owners because less of your building will be hidden, and it's great for pedestrians because there's more space to walk, run, or shop than ever before."

If you cannot tell what exactly they are replacing, then they've done a good job.

More details after the jump.

As a result of the urbanSHED contest, designer Young-Hwan Choi's Urban Umbrella came out on top for the best idea of a replacement for sidewalk sheds. Formerly, sidewalks would be covered by make-shift scaffolding. Things would fall between the cracks of the plywood above pedestrians' heads. Generally, people were discomforted by these haggard alleys, if they didn't manage to avoid them.

The construction of these sheds, however, is a measure of safety and is therefore necessary to keep debris away from passing pedestrians, but also serve as a base for workers and supplies. It is a great example of a simple design to greatly enhance the human experience.
